England vs Bangladesh Prediction: England takes on Bangladesh at Cardiff Sophia Garden today in the 12th match of the World Cup. The form of England in the last four years should make them outright favourites, but the previous two World Cup meeting, England vs Bangladesh in 2011, 2015 has gone in favour of Bangla Tigers. Can it change today or will Bangladesh get hat-trick of a win over England? England vs Bangladesh will be an interesting match to watch.
Team’s Road to World Cup:
It was a loss to Bangladesh which triggered England resurrection in the ODI cricket . The template of ODI cricket played by England since then changed and they now adopt see and hit the ball approach from ball one. Since World Cup debacle in 2015, England has twice posted the highest score in ODI first in 2016 scoring 444-3 and then bettering 481-6 against Australia in 2018 along with getting the most number of 350+ score while winning both home and away.
Bangladesh has notched up several significant wins in all three format since 201.5 They have won consistently over the top-ranked nation such as India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand. Under Mashrafe Mortaza they also qualified for the semi-final in 2017 World Cup. With the consistency of leader in ODI, and a win percentage of 54% in the last four years. Bangladesh is improved side.
To be noted, they came into World Cup on back of a win in series involving Ireland, and West Indies in Ireland. The region has condition similar to England.
Men to watch out for
Tamim Iqbal though out of form in last two matches would like to thrive the opportunity to play against his favourite team. Three of his nine Test centuries and two of his 11 one-day tons have come against the host nation. He may have scored 40 runs across two innings, but he fought hard to keep new bowlers like KG Rabada, Trent Boult at bay before falling prey to first change bowler. Perhaps, seeing England team in opposition rank might turn him on to get significant score.
In Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmadullah they have formidable and world-class core who have been around for long. All three played in two matches which handed England the upset in 2011,2015 WC edition. Shakib has been great in the last two with his all-round performance. Bangladesh need Shakib firing to have any chance to win over the Three Lions.
Bangladesh has a senior core of four players with vast experience in Tamim Iqbal, Shakib, Mahmudullah and Mashrafe Mortaza, unlike England. Even Mushfiqur Rahim has played 207 ODIs. Morgan is the only player in the England team to have played as many games. Also, a team cannot buy experience.
In Soumya Sarkar, they have unearthed new opener who can match Tamim ball to ball and showed glimpses of his talent against South Africa, New Zealand. If he can do the same against England in the first ten overs, Bangladesh will be heading for a big score.
In Mossadek, Saifuddin, Mehidy Hassan they got quality all-rounders who had decent hits in both matches.
While Mushrafizur Rahman will be Bangladesh biggest hope, In 48 games sine 2015 CWC he has taken 83 wickets at an economy under five while Rubel Hossain and skipper Mashrafe Mortaza are experienced enough to use the skill sets to good effect. England also will be wary of Mahmudullah who played a big part in knocking down England in previous World Cup meeting.
For England, only change with Liam Plunkett coming in for Adil Rashid is likely to be a factor considering the nature of the pitch while the rest of the lineup remains the same.
For England, Jonny Bairstow will be keen to make amends for failure in first two innings, Jos Butler will be crucial against spinners in middle and death over. Joe Root who is leading run scorer of the tournament would look to continue his hot streak and should a wicket fall in the first ten overs; his contribution is essential to see the side through safely before exploding in the end,he is equally adept against pace and spin and so he becomes the dangerman in this explosive lineup.
With the ball it has to be Jofra Archer with pitch favoring quick, could be too hot to handle in first ten overs. And should Bangladesh lose two early wickets in the first hour the experienced lineup will be tested. The comeback man Liam Plunkett has an excellent record at this venue with his 11 wickets at 16 apiece, including four for 53 against Australia last year.
Unlike Oval, Pitch at Cardiff Gardens will offer assistance to the bowler in first ten overs. Rain is likely to delay the proceeding though later half of the day shows a much better prospect of the rain staying away and the temperature is expected to be 14-15 degrees Celsius. In the first match, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 136 with Kiwis knocked them over as early as 16th over. Lankan Tigers showed nerves to defend 201 against Afghanistan in a rain-affected encounter. The average score at this venue in the last 5 encounters has been 258.
So side who wins toss, should bowl first If England wins the toss and put Bangladesh in for bat that spells destruction for visiting nation while England has great batting depth to reach a competitive score. It will be a brave decision if the team wins the toss and bats first.
The match looks like a competitive match on paper, but England should get back to their winning ways. However, Bangladesh has talent, experience to seize the moments against the top-ranked team. Can it be tomorrow?
Bangladesh does have a chance, and unlike the West Indies, Bangladesh has won matches from a tough situation against top nation in the past. They can take inspiration from their first win over Australia here in 2005.
Home advantages and fact they got wake up call against Pakistan should make England more hungrier to pull this off.
