Delhi Assembly Elections: Return of CCTV Camera Politics
Delhi Assembly Elections : The National Capital Territory of Delhi is set to go for polls in the year 2020. In 2015 Assembly Election, Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party created a political earthquake in Delhi. The party born out of Anna Movement won 67 of 70 assembly seats of Delhi assembly. BJP was reduced to mere 3 assembly seats while Congress could not open its account. Arvind Kejriwal, with massive mandate went on to become the Chief Minister of Delhi. Added to it, he and his party, AAP, was looked upon as a future alternative of national politics.
Before coming to power in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal led AAP had promised to transform Delhi into one of the most developed cities of the world. Installation of 15 lakhs CCTV cameras was part of this plan. Aam Aadmi Party had promised to install 15 lakh cameras in the national capital to maintain law and order. However, four and half years down the line no step had been taken by the AAP government towards fulfilling this promise.
Impact of Lok Sabha 2019 Result
Since the massive mandate in Delhi assembly election, the Aam Aadmi Party has failed to win any of the election in national capital. The ambitious AAP was decimated in the municipal corporation election that was held in 2017, two years after the party formed its government in Delhi. In the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, Arvind Kejriwal and team faced a humiliating defeat. The party could not win even a single Lok Sabha seat in Delhi. AAP came third in all the 7 Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, that is behind Congress. Added to it, the party lost three of its four Lok Sabha seats that it had won in Punjab in 2014. The loss has caste a doubt on return of Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister of Delhi in 2020.
CCTV Politics in Delhi
The BJP MP from East Delhi, on Sunday, 23rd June took to twitter to inform that he was installing CCTV cameras in his constituency. He even took a shot at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ruling Aam Aadmi Party who had installation of 15 lakhs CCTV cameras in national capital in their poll manifesto. He said that the cameras were also going to focus on the fake promises of the AAP chief, who had once promised to install CCTV cameras in the national capital.
AAP to install 3 Lakh CCTV Cameras
With few months remaining for Delhi Assembly elections, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia began the Aam Aadmi party-government’s CCTV cameras installation project in the national capital. In his address to media, he assured that around 3 lakhs CCTV cameras will be installed in Delhi in next 50 days. “As the crime is increasing day by day, the role of the Delhi government can be to install CCTV cameras at every street. RWA (Resident Welfare Association) and police will get a direct feed of these cameras. The project of installing three lakh CCTV cameras has started,” the Dy CM of Delhi told the reporters after the camera installation in his constituency, Patparganj.
How will this move benefit AAP? – Predictions
Aam Aadmi Party was able to secure 33% vote share in 2015 assembly election. However, the results of Lok Sabha election was enough to send shivers in the heart of Arvind Kejriwal and team. Their vote share was reduced to mere 18 percent in national capital. Moreover, out of 70 assembly seats, the party stood third in 54 assembly constituency and second in 16 constituency. Added to it, the assembly constituency from where Arvind Kejriwal himself is an MLA, the party lost its deposit. BJP on other hand, led on 65 of the assembly constituencies in Delhi.
In our prediction market, BJP to win Delhi Assembly elections 2020 has seen a massive increase in transaction, however today there has been no buyer for it.
With few months away from the Delhi assembly election, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government has started to fulfill the poll promises of 2015. If rumors are to be believed, national capital may also have access to free Wifi in coming days. However, how much will these last minute moves of Arvind Kejriwal and team will translate into votes is for time to decide. If the trends are to be believed and Lok Sabha election result is to be considered, then Arvind Kejriwal may fail to return to power in Delhi Assembly Elections 2020.
