Tether is a stable cryptocurrency, unlike other cryptos which are volatile and change largely as per the market. Tether was in fact designed to be as par with a dollar value. Often investors buy Tether to purchase other cryptocurrencies. However, it is still unclear of Tether having enough dollar reserves to justify its dollar peg.

Tether was first published online in January 2012. However, the precursor to Tether, originally named “Realcoin”, was announced in July 2014 by co-founders Brock Pierce, Reeve Collins, and Craig Sellars as a Santa Monica based startup. The first tokens were issued on 6 October 2014, on the Bitcoin blockchain.
On 20 November 2014, Tether CEO Reeve Collins announced the project was being renamed “Tether.” In January 2015, the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex enabled trading of Tether on their platform. Tether issues tokens on bitcoin (Omni and Liquid Protocol), Ethereum, EOS, Tron, Algorand, SLP and OMG blockchains.
More than $500 million of Tether was issued in August 2018. In May 2021, there were 59.9 billion USDT in existence; this climbed to 63 billion in August 2021. New tokens are not mined but minted by Tether Ltd.
