Bollywood celebrity Anushka Sharma has been slapped with a legal notice for showcasing racist remarks in the Amazon Prime show Pataal Lok. Anushka Sharma is the producer of the series which was released recently by. The crime fiction which has been gathering high ratings from its viewers has been under scrutiny for its racial slurs.

The series stirred up a major controversy after certain dialogues seemed to come off as extremely intolerant and stereotypical.  Nanda Kirati Dewan who is the president of the Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangh, gave a statement in which she said, “We should refrain from consuming content that shows a community in a negative light just for the sake of creative freedom.”

Anushka Sharma received much back lash after the news went viral about the racial slurs that were used in a show. The scene follows a police officer who uses derogatory words to establish the stereotypical mindset people have towards minorities. The word ‘Nepali’ was followed by an epithetic term, which should not be promoted.

However, The Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangh has requested people not to verbally attack Anushka Sharma online, as many people took to their social media handles to express their disdain towards the scene. In a tweet the BGYP expressed that their fight is against the stereotype and not any person, and they will continue to fight against the racist remarks in the web series Patal Lok.


The Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangh have appealed to the producer and the Union information and broadcasting ministry, to mute the dialogue, blur the subtitle and issue and apology. They have also demanded the edited episode to be uploaded, and take down the original episode.

Pataal Lok is a crime fiction series that was released earlier this month. It follows the journey of a police inspector who is investigating a high-profile case. The show has a high 8.3 IMDb rating.
