The Era of Sourav Ganguly : In 1983 when Kapil Dev’s Team India defeated West Indies to lift the cricket World Cup for the time it marked the turning point for Indian cricket. However, Indian cricket did not change after that. Though the World champions, the world of cricket was yet to recognise Indian cricket team as a major favourite. However, this changed when Sourav Ganguly took over the captaincy of Indian cricket.

Former England Cricket Captain Naseer Hussain remarks Sourav Ganguly as the captain who changed the face of Indian cricket. According to him, Ganguly transformed the boys of Indian cricket team into a ruthless men of Indian cricket team. Therefore, one of the greatest cricket victory of Indian cricket is also attributed to him.

India’s one of the greatest cricket victory is the night when India won the three nations Natwest Series in 2002. It must not be forgotten that Ganguly took over as Captain of Indian cricket team when match fixing rocked the entire world of cricket. It was the period when the Indian cricketing fans had started losing their interest in cricket. Ganguly gave a new life to Indian cricket and was successful in restoring the trust of Indian fans back in cricket.

The Era of Sourav Ganguly : Remembering the Natwest Series Finals at Lord’s 2002

In the Natwest final at Lord’s cricket ground in 2002, India chasing a target of 326 to win the Trophy. India was struggling at 146/5 when both Yuvraj and Kaif got together at the crease. The duo put on a partnership of 121 runs to give India a glimmer of hope in the match. Captian Sourav Ganguly himself was a half centurion in the finals of the Natwest Series. Since then Indian cricket changed completely. Therefore, the win in Natewest Series can be considered as the India’s Greatest victory in history of cricket.

According to Nasser Hussain, India was a ‘nice team’ with fantastic players. But it was Ganguly who was responsible for making a tough team out of it. Naseer Hussain who was the Captian of English cricket team when India won Natwest Series, made these statement in a conversation with Harsh Bhogle when he was asked about the Indian captains. The Englishmen firmly said that Ganguly infused the habit of winning games abroad in Indian team.

After the Natwest Series victory in 2002, the charged up Indian cricket team made their way into the World Cup finals of 2003. However, the team lost the finals to Australia, but it marked the beginning of creation of real world champions of cricketing history.

The “Maharaja”  of Indian cricket finally retired from international cricket in 2008 after playing his last Test against Australia at home. Since then Ganguly has continued his association with cricket working as a Cricket commentator. At present Sourav Ganguly heads the BCCI, the governing body of Indian cricket.
