Chelsea vs Man United Prediction and Odds: Preview

Chelsea’s UCL hopes once again brightened as they hammered Juventus by four goals in the Champions League group stage. Both the teams are level on points but the Blues are sitting at the top for having a much superior goal difference.

They needed only a draw to progress to the next round but Trevor Chalobah had some other plans. His volley from close range opened up the scoring and Juventus defence got humiliated throughout the match.Recce James scored a second in the proceedings while Callum Hudson-Odoi and Timo Werner finished the job.

For United it wasn’t smooth sailing as they toiled hard for most of the game. Villarreal dominated with the ball and the United backline had a testing time against them. Donny van de Beek played from the start in a rare game and was quite smootin in the transition.

Manu Trigueros saw his effort blocked by a brilliant David de Gea who was at the top of his game.

Fred won the possession just outside the penalty area and the ball came to Cristiano Ronaldo’s feet who just chipped the ball to open the scoring for the visitors.

Jadon Sancho then blasted the net with a thumping shot and sealed the all important three points for United.

United’s title charge has gone haywire as they are down to 8th position having recorded only 5 wins out of 12. But they still have a chance for a top four finish and a win against Chelsea would just solidify their position in the table.

With the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this will be the first time this season United will play without a full time manager at the helm.

Michael Carrick did well in his first match guiding United to the Champions League next round but his real test will be against Chelsea who have been relentless in the Premier League.

Thomas Tuchel continued his brilliant work as the Chelsea gaffer and their win over Juventus has set the tone for the weekend.

Tuchel’s nurturing of Chelsea’s academy product has been one of the reasons for Chelsea’s success. Trevor Chalobah has emerged as the next big thing as he has been a mainstay in the Chelsea defence.

Recce James has been scoring goals for fun and once again popped up the question on why he should be the first choice for England.

Callum Hudson-Odoi capped off a lovely evening with a wonderful striker and his linkup play will only add to Tuchel’s selection headache.

For United, it was Ronaldo again who rose up to the occasion and now has scored in each of the five Champions League appearances. Solskjaer has failed to use the most of him as the 36 year old has the knack of scoring the most important goals whenever his team needed the most.

He became the first player to score in every match of an English club’s Champions League campaign. It has been touted Ronaldo doesn’t fit into this tactical setup of United but goal scoring rate indicates otherwise.

He has scored six goals in five Champions League games and four goals and two assists in eight starts in the Premier League. Whoever might become the manager needs to plan his tactics around Ronaldo because this 36 year old guarantee goals.

David de Gea is back at what he does best, saving United days after days. The United shot stopper was replaced by Dean Henderson in the Premier League last season but was adamant to find his place this season.

He came back quickly in the preseason and since then has been the number one choice in the United goal. He has saved United numerous times and the supporters should be indebted to him.

However, Chelsea’s brilliant win over Juventus got dampened by injuries to Ben Chilwell and N’Golo Kante. Both the players had to be called off and Thomas Tuchel made it clear they need to go further tests to determine the extent of their injury.

Edouard Mendy has been in outstanding form since replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Chelsea goal and has won matches single handedly for the Blues.

In defence, Thiago Silva has defied the odds and has stayed strong to beef up the backline.

Overall Tuchel has set his standards and Carrick needs to go beyond his expectations in a bid to down Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

A number of people have been linked with the United job as Mauricio Pochettino remains in pole position. Although the Argentine refuted the rumours if an offer does come he won’t reject it seems.
Kai Havertz missed out on the Juventus clash for a hamstring problem and the German international is also expected to miss this crucial match.

Another option #mufc have considered in the short-term would be to give Michael Carrick a more extended run in charge, but that would depend on him delivering a sharp upturn in performances and results #mulive [@TimesSport]

Ronaldo has embarrassed another pundit Ronaldo is the solution, not the problem 5 games, 6 goals and 10 points won. Cristiano Ronaldo is a problem Manchester United must be happy to have. The scary thing is, United is a World Class manager away from being competitive again.
