Brendan Rodgers is Manchester United’s first choice for their next manager.

Manchester United have sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the disappointing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford in the Premier League.

His position was in severe danger after a string of bad results and the loss in the last match sealed the final nail in the coffin. The Liverpool defeat is still fresh in everyone’s mind and the Watford defeat pointed out that perhaps a managerial change was needed.

The club did a golden handshake with the manager with the Norwegian set to receive a payoff in the tune of £8m after leaving the managerial position.

Antonio Conte’s name came up as the Red Devils reportedly had looked at different candidates to replace Solskjaer but it didn’t materialise and Tottenham Hostpur took the challenge and appointed him following the removal of Nuno Espirito Santo from the club.

Michael Carrick will take the interim charge as United are scheduled to face Villarreal on Tuesday but a full-time manager will be appointed as the Red Devils hierarchy are working on a number of managerial candidates.

Zinedine Zidane is the preferred choice for the United hierarchy. The French manager is one of the most successful managers with three Champions League titles. He left in 2018 to take a break but returned in the last season only to leave the club in the summer.

The Frenchman doesn’t seem to be interested in taking the United job for his language barrier as he doesn’t speak English at all and also his family doesn’t want to move to the UK.

Brendan Rodgers has proven experience and his work with Liverpool and Leicester City cannot be undone. He almost lifted the Premier League title with Liverpool and guided Leicester to the Europa League last season.

He won a plethora of trophies during his stint with Celtic and also won the FA Cup with the Foxes by defeating Chelsea in the final. If an offer comes he is likely to say yes as this kind of offer only arrives once in a lifetime.

Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the Manchester United job a number of times but never came closer. He managed Tottenham Hotspur and guided them to the Champions League final but a coveted trophy has eluded him so far.

He is currently managing at Paris Saint-Germain but is believed to be not completely happy with how the situation has progressed over there.
