Man United vs Villarreal Prediction and Odds: Preview
The Red Devils have not undergone massive changes despite their recent dip in form. They won the last encounter against Villarreal 2-1 and would be trying to replicate their form this time around.
In Solskjaer’s absence, Carrick will be in charge of the on field activities and he might tweak the lineup in a bid to get the best out of the team.
Since the 5-0 beating at the hands of Liverpool Solskjaer’s job had remained shaky as he was given the ultimatum for the next few matches.United had barely looked title contenders this season as they have struggled to see off games despite having a pretty strong squad on paper.
Not only Solskjaer a number of players have not played to their potential and they need to be benched. United are sitting top of the Group F and a win would be enough to secure a place in the next stage.
They had an uncharacteristic defeat by Young Boys in the first game of the Champions League but avenged their Europa League final defeat with a win against Villarreal in the next clash.
They defeated Atalanta 3-2 and again played a 2-2 draw with them in the reverse fixture to keep themselves in the hunt.
Villarreal remain unbeaten in their last three games in all competition and will come at full steam against this shaky Manchester United side. They have won their last two matches in the Champions League but have never won against the Red Devils in regulation time.
A David De Gea penalty miss saw Solskjaer missing his first major trophy by a whisker but that might have been the start of his downfall. United have failed to start from where they left last season and have now lost five in the last seven matches in the Premier League.
But there were instances when United rose above all and performed with intentions. They went on to win on their last three trips to Manchester City and also defeated Paris Saint-Germain twice in his reins.
Solskajer’s previous stint as Cardiff City and Molde manager wasn’t deemed enough to be the next Manchester United manager but he did well in his initial days which handed him the job permanently.
He also extended his contract a few months ago as the belief was there he could be able to take United to the top again. But losses started to mount as United’s vulnerabilities became very evident. The Norwegian failed to give the side a clear identity and with Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola shaping the Premier League with their philosophies it wasn’t meant to work out for Solskjaer.
Added to that the Cristiano Ronaldo problem has appeared this season. United grabbed the chance to bring back their golden boy in the summer and since then the Portuguese has become an integral part of the current setup.
His growing age has a partial effect on his style of play and he is no more the fierce winger that he is used to be. He rather plays as a natural number nine and depends mostly on the supporting play.
However, his lack of willingness to press hard has been a matter of concern. Expectations skyrocketed following the arrival of the superstar at the Old Trafford and the manager sometimes had to build the team around as he simply couldn’t afford to drop him to the bench.
Also, players like Jesse Lingard and Donny van de Beek hardly have had game time to impress the departing gaffer. Donny was introduced at halftime and scored the only goal in the match which happened to be the last goal in the Solskjaer era.

Look at what the two defunct boards are trying to do at @ManUtd & @FCBarcelona – Managers sacked midway through the season, both are 12 points away from the league leaders And no sign of things looking up.
All this talk of an interim manager tells us one thing; the board at Manchester United were not prepared for this. They have no continuity or contingency plan. They have been hapless for years when it comes to decision making. They fired Solskjaer but have no clue who is coming.
Olé is a Manchester United great and also a likable person. That it didn’t work out for him at the end doesn’t erase all the good works he did for the club. He still has his supporters within the club.
