History of Newspaper In India : From black and white newspapers to color newspaper and now a digital one, newspaper in India has undergone changes as per the requirement of time. History of Newspaper in India lies in the era of British rule in India. It was in the year 1780 when first newspaper in India was printed. Under the name of Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, James Augustus Hicky printed the first newspaper in India.
With the launch of first newspaper in India in 1780, it took more than 50 years for the launch of first hindi daily newspaper in India. Udant Martand became the first Hindi daily newspaper to be published in the year 1826. The newspaper was published from Calcutta now Kolkata by Pt Jugal Kishore Shukla.

At present India publishes about 1000 Hindi dailies and around 250 English dailies. Combined together, both Hindi and English newspapers accounts to circulation of around 120 million copies. Source: Wikipedia

At present in terms of Hindi dailies, Dainik Jagran is the most read newspaper. It is followed by Dainik Bhaskar and The Indian Observer. When it comes to English Dailies, Times of India leads the table followed by The Hindu and the Economic Times. In India, newspapers are published not just in Hindi and English languages but also in regional languages. In terms of regional language readership Tamil Newspaper Daily Thanthi is the most read regional language newspaper. It is followed by Marathi newspaper Lokmat and then followed by Malayalam newspaper, Manorama
What started during British rule, India’s print media have seen different stages of struggle. From being banned to being forced to serve as government mouth piece, the history of Indian newspaper has been both bright and dark. With the advancement of digital media, the demand of newspapers have fallen drastically. However, the print media, newspaper will always be cherished as a first source of information in maximum households of India.
