1,000,000 Coronavirus Cases in India : What Next Now?

Coronavirus Cases in India : The number of coronavirus cases in India has shy rocketed and crossed a million cases. the pandemic has been hitting the country hard these past couple of months. With over 684 deaths in the past 24 hours, highest yet, the total number of deaths due to the virus have crossed 25000.

Earlier during spring, it was hoped that the summers would bring some relief to the country as viruses generally do not survive well in hot temperatures, but despite soaring heat, the effect of coronavirus in the country just accelerated and got amplified, rather than bringing any kind of relief. This novel coronavirus has taken everyone by surprise by its sheer ability to spread and mutate at an ever-fast rate.

More than 36,000 cases were registered in the country in the last 24-hours.

The top contributors remain Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra has been reporting more than 7000 cases each day, making it the worst hit state in the country. The total number of cases in the state is inching towards the 3,00,000 mark, and it is predicted that the state will cross it by the end of next week, or maybe even sooner.

Karnataka has crossed the 50,000 mark, and the cases are increasing exponentially in the state, as the growth rate has crossed 7%. Karnataka is the fourth worst hit state in India taking over Gujarat. More than 4000 cases were reported in the state in the past 24 hours.

In Tamil Nadu, more than 12 legislators have tested positive for coronavirus. The situation of southern Indian states remains dire, as the number of cases per day has been increasing rapidly despite their efforts to control the spread by implementing lockdowns and rapid testing.

Coronavirus Cases in India : Why is the Number of Cases Rising?

India is the third worst hit country in the world, right after USA and Brazil. Alone, these three countries account for more than half of the world’s total coronavirus cases.

The high population density and an overburdened healthcare system are a couple of reasons why India has been performing badly.

India’s coronavirus cases, at over a million are nearing Brazil’s count.

The higher number of tests have started to reveal more positive cases which were until now not reported. In a country with over a billion people packed together, a sudden burst in cases was not too surprising. It was only time that the outburst landed us in the top three countries of the world.

The government did impose a stringent lockdown, one of the strictest in the world, but the number of tests conducted per day only recently started increasing. Earlier the country was conducting tests, but the number was next to nothing in comparison to the population of India. Even now, the total number of tests per million is lower in India, if we look at other countries who are conducting a higher number of tests per day.

But as every cloud has a silver lining, Delhi has proven to be that silver lining for Indians. The state was inching closer and closer to a catastrophic epidemic, with the highest daily growth rate in India, but that has now dropped to just 1.7%, making Delhi the only state to show a declining trend in over two weeks.

If all state governments follow Delhi’s Plan of Action, they too can curb the epidemic and start a declining trend. States such as Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar islands, Lakshadweep, Meghalaya, Mizoram, have reported a relatively lower coronavirus case percentage of cases in the country.
