COVID-19 is costing Mamata Banerjee her state, Bengal?
Bhoy Peyeche Mamata or Mamata is Scared, BJP Bengal unit started a social media campaign against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after she has been avoiding media since last 9-10 days. Since March, Mamata Banerjee has been interacting with media everyday and updating about the COVID19 situation in state. However, after the question arising about her failure in handling COVID19 case in state and hiding the numbers of cases, she has not interacted with media since April 30th.
With West Bengal assembly election less than a year away, the COVID-19 crisis has created a bigger trouble Mamata Banerjee government. As she has always done, Mamata Banerjee is again blaming Modi government for her incompetence in handling the Coronavirus issue in the state. When Coronavirus issue was in initial stage that is in month of March, Mamata Banerjee blamed Modi government of creating panic over virus and diverting the attention from the Delhi communal riots.
Since beginning Mamata Banerjee’s handling of COVID-19 issue has been a big issue. Her government has been blamed of hiding numbers of cases as well as acting casually towards the increasing cases in the state. It must be noted that since April 1st the state also stopped publishing daily medical bulletin and when it was started, the bulletin missed the information that it used to contain before April 1st. Recently, BJP taking advantage of the situation launched an online survey to seek the feedback from the people on TMC Government’s preparedness in handling COVID-19.
According to latest data, West Bengal has reported around 1939 COVID-19 cases with 185 fatalities. If situation is to be understood, many believe that the number of Coronavirus cases in West Bengal is under reported. Recently a poll released by Times Now showed that in Kolkata only 6% people supported Mamata Benerjee’s handling of COVID-19 case. It must be noted that in Lok Sabha 2019, Mamata Banerjee’s TMC got around 49% vote in Kolkata. The decline in popularity of Didi in her strong hold is clear indication of TMC losing grip over state.
If recent Google trend data is to be analysed, there is clear indication of Trinamool Congress losing plot in Bengal. The rise of BJP in state is clearly visible from the data. It must be noted that, in Lok Sabha 2019, BJP handed the biggest election shocker to Mamata Banerjee. The party with mere 2 Lok Sabha seat won 18 Lok Sabha seats while TMC was reduced from 34 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 to 22 Lok Sabha seats in 2019.
When in doubt, Mamata Benerjee has always accused centre of Modi government of playing politics. However, this time Mamta knows that 2021 battle has become tough for her. The support that she had among the masses is fading away. At the same time BJP’s lack of face in the state may prove to be fatal for its dream to saffronise state in 2021. However, we are around a year away from West Bengal election and a year is enough to change the political course of any state.
