CWC Meet Live : Why Congress should Move ahead of Gandhis? : Before we talk about why Congress should move ahead of Gandhi’s let us see how Congress has performed in last few elections since Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi has been at helm of power in Indian National Congress.
Sonia Gandhi officially became Congress President in the year 1998 and since then it has been her or her son Rahul Gandhi who took over as charge of President of Indian National Congress.
Since 1998, when Sonia Gandhi became President, there has been five Lok Sabha elections. In four elections, Congress fought under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and in one that is in 2019, Rahul Gandhi was the president of Indian National Congress. Of the five Lok Sabha elections Congress won two of them, that is in 2004 and 2009. Here is how Congress performed in five Lok Sabha elections since 1998.
In Lok Sabha election 1999, Indian National Congress could win 114 Lok Sabha seats under leadership of Sonia Gandhi. BJP on the hand won 182 seats and along with its allies formed government at the center with Atal Bihar Vajpayee as the Prime Minister of India.
Lok Sabha 2004 and 2009 were the two Lok Sabha elections where leadership of Sonia Gandhi was appreciated. However, of 400 seats contested, Congress on its own could only 145 seats in 2004 Lok Sabha election while BJP won 138 of 364 contested seats in 2004 Lok Sabha elections. In 2009, Congress made a big jump in terms of total Lok Sabha seats. Under leadership of Sonia Gandhi, Congress won 206 seats, biggest since 1999 Lok Sabha election.
However, last 6 years turned out to be the most disastrous 6 years in the history of Indian National Congress. In 2014 Lok Sabha election Congress was completely routed. Party which ruled Indian for about 60+ years since independence did not have seats required to be officially declared leader of opposition in Indian Parliament. Under leadership of Sonia Gandhi Congress was reduced to 44 seats with voteshare below 20%
In 2017, Rahul Gandhi took over the charge as President of Indian National Congress from his mother. 2019 Lok Sabha election was contested by Congress under his leadership. However, Rahul Gandhi could not add any benefit to sinking Congress. In 2019 Lok sabha election, Congress could add only 8 more seats to it previous tally of 44 seats, while BJP won the election one more time with absolute majority. Congress was able maintain voteshare percentage similar to 2014 Lok Sabha election.
After Lok Sabha election 2019, Rahul Gandhi resigned as the President of Indian National Congress, however, the post of President got rotated back to Sonia Gandhi once again rather than any other leader of Indian National Congress.
CWC Meet Live : Why Congress should Move ahead of Gandhis to save Party?
At present Congress on its own has governments in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Punjab. Congress is part of alliance in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. In rest of the states either there is a BJP government or a regional party government. In the last 6 years Congress has not just lost elections but also leaders. From SM Krishna to Jyotiraditya Scindia, Congress leadership has failed to keep its flock together. Added to it this weakness has certainly led to loss of governments in states like in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.
Not just this leaders like Sanjay Nirupam, Milind Deora has spoken against the party and favoritism of party leadership towards some leaders. The lack of democracy within party is also hurting Congress. Recently, Sanjay Jha, a Congress spokesperson who is known to defend Congress and its leadership on every front was removed from the post of Congress spokesperson. His mistake was that he spoke against the leadership of Party.
Not only Sanjay, none of the leaders are allowed to voice against anyone whom the party leadership considers to be friends. Recently, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP was forced to delete his tweet just because it was against China.
Indian National Congress is the oldest political party of India. Born in the year 1885, the part saw leadership of Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri and many more tall leaders of India. Today the party has reached in a stage when it is fighting for its survival. In such a situation. it is better for Congress to move ahead of one family and save the party first.
