Maharashtra Politics : Is NCP taking over Shiv Sena?
Maharashtra Politics : Before we discuss how NCP is taking over Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, we would like to share one image from Maharashtra that has made into national news.

The above image shows NCP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar surrounded by few people. The image carries utmost importance in Maharashtra Politics as the among the ones surrounding Ajit Pawar are the five Shiv Sena Corporators from Parner Nagar Panchayat in Ahmednagar who joined NCP on 4th of July in presence in Ajit Pawar. This incident clearly reflects that Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra is undergoing a turbulence and there the cracks within are the alliance are now visible in open.
How has Maharashtra Politics Changed since November 2019?
In November 2019, the three political parties Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress came together to form Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra. The main aim of the alliance was to keep BJP out of power in state. However, 8 months since then the cracks in the alliance is clearly visible. Recently, Congress leaders of Maharashtra have expressed their reservation against the alliance. They complained that both Shiv Sena and NCP were not including them in policy making activities of the state. Moreover, many decisions were taken without consulting with them. This time situation is different, Sharad Pawar’s NCP is in an open conflict with Uddav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena.
Sharad Pawar, the NCP chief and the Chairperson of Maha Vikas Aghadi has always been vocal against the Modi government. But in recent days he has spoken more against his alliance partners than Modi government. Recently, after all party meet held by Central government to discuss situation along LAC Sharad Pawar was seen schooling Congress. He reminded them of what happened in 1962 and supported Modi government in every action that it has taken against China. Added to it on 27th June, he termed Ladakh to be a sensitive issue and there was no failure of government regarding what happened on 15th June.
Recently Anil Deshmukh, the NCP leader and Maharashtra Home Minister cancelled the transfer of 10 Deputy Commissioner of Police. As per reports, the order was issued by the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. However, Anil Deshmukh specified that the revocation of order was done after the consultation with the Chief Minister. Reason behind the revocation of order was not specified but the matter clearly reflects the lack of coordination between the alliance partners of the state government.
The Sena-Congress-NCP partnership has started showing signs of dissension. Recently, when Uddhav Thackeray declared the extension of lockdown, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar expressed his discontentment with the decision. Sharad Pawar asked CM Uddhav Thackeray to take all the allies in confidence before taking any decision.
There has been discontent among the Sena-NCP-Congress govt since the cabinet expansion in January. Congress and Sena camp have accused that the NCP has walked away with not only the highest number of portfolios but also the most important ones. Moreover, several ministers from NCP and Congress have accused Uddhav Thackeray of depending more on bureaucrats than his alliance partners. Congress has openly voiced that they were not included in the decision making process of the government. Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat, minister Ashok Chavan have openly stated that the party has had no say in any of the decision being taken by the Thackeray-government.
Sharad Pawar is the senior most and the most shrewd politician in Maharashtra. He knows how to deal with respective politician and parties. Concluding anything out of his recent moves will mean nothing. Therefore even if Sena corporators joined NCP or Pawar expressed his displeasure against Uddhav Thackeray’s decision of extending lockdown, one must not conclude that alliance in Maharashtra is on a shaky ground. As of now, the alliance is intact and government is struggling dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.
