Pennsylvania Governor Race 2022 Polls: Josh Shapiro To Be Democratic Nominee while Lou Barletta leads the GOP Primary Race as per the Latest Polls

The 2022 Governor Election in Pennsylvania is set to take place on November 8th, 2022. The seat is open after 2 term Democratic Governor Tom Wolf is termed out. His Lt. Governor, Fetterman is running for Senate which leaves Attorney General Josh Shapiro as the only Dem nominee.

He has served in the role for 5 years winning by 4.6 points in 2020 despite Biden winning by only 1.2. He was the most successful Democrat to run state-wide and hopes to continue his good electoral performance in 2022 and win the Governor’s mansion.

The 2018 race was not competitive as Wolf romped to victory by 17 points just 2 years after Clinton lost the state. The state legislature has a Republican majority in both the house and senate.

Most prognosticators rate this race as a “toss-up”, including RCP, Sabato’s Crystal Ball and Cook Political Report. Pennsylvania will once again face tons of competitive races this including in the Senate, where both primaries remain competitive along with the general election. Read our preview of that race here.

Pennsylvania Governor Race 2022 Polls: Racial Demographics

As per the latest 2020 Census Figures, the population of the state is as follows:
White votes remain a large majority and it’s the same case in both party’s primaries. Black voters remain a crucial voting bloc for Dems and they need to ensure Philadelphia turns out to be high. The 4 suburban “collar” counties around the city are also huge vote banks for Dems as they trend away from Trump’s GOP.

Montgomery and Delaware County are especially important. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh and its metro area have been a bright spot for Democrats while they lose votes in white working-class areas in North-East Pennsylvania (NEPA) like Biden’s hometown of Scranton. South Central PA is an extremely vote-rich area and the counties of Cumbria, Northumberland, and Lebanon will be battlegrounds again. That area along with the rural counties remains a vote source for the GOP.
